In a ground-breaking collaboration aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of freight transport, Pass Logistics and the University of Birmingham have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to shift heavy freight from roads to railways. This strategic partnership focuses on exploring innovative ways to address this challenge, with experts from Pass Logistics teaming up with researchers from the University's Centre of Excellence in Rail Decarbonisation, a part of the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE).
The collaboration aims to revolutionise the freight transport industry by helping companies understand their carbon output and evaluating the impacts and costs of alternative approaches. Professor Clive Roberts, BCRRE Director, emphasised the importance of practical, financially viable solutions, stating, "Making progress in decarbonising transport means working closely with our partners in industry to develop approaches that can be implemented in a straightforward, financially viable way. Pass Logistics already has great insight into the challenges facing the road haulage industry and we're looking forward to working with them."
Adrian Sullivan, founder of Pass Logistics, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting the company's commitment to addressing climate change. By increasing the utilisation of rail for haulage, the impact could be monumental. Pass Logistics estimates that for every full goods train, approximately 80 heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) would be removed from the roads, potentially resulting in a 75% reduction in carbon emissions.
